A gravity-fed, multi-filter system removed 100% of test particles from a thick blood analogue and filtered it at more than 500cc per minute.
Of the test spheres (2.3 mm, 355-425 micron and 63-75 micron) were kept out of the final filtrate.
Filtration rate. Each 100 cc sample passed through in 4-7 seconds.
Trials gave identical results, with no particles in the collection chamber.
Retriever Medical is developing a gravity-fed, multi-filter system
intended to filter a patient's own (autologous) whole blood for reinfusion. An Earlier bench study by the same authors found no cell injury or clotting changes when pig and human blood were passed through.
The study checked two things: how reliably the filters keep particles of different sizes out of the final filtrate, and how fast fluid passes through.

All five trials gave identical results. The steel spheres stayed above the 2 mm filter, both sizes or microspheres collected above the 250 micron filter, and only the smallest microspheres reached the 40 micron filter. No particles entered the collection chamber.
Each 100cc sample filtered in 4-7 seconds, a rate of more than 500cc per minute, even with a fluid thicker than whole blood. The authors conclude the device may prove useful for reinfusing autologous blood, which further study will need to confirm.

In live porcine, the ClotHound spheres were expanded 20-40% beyond vessel diameter and moved back and forth without significant damage to the vessel lining.
The 24F aspiration/guide catheter (7.1 mm ID) tracked through serial 90-180 degree turns, with no lumen collapse at a 6 mm radius of curvature.
The expandable wire sphere pushed on the vessel wall with at most 22 N of force, far below the force reported to rupture the saphenous vein and pulmonary artery.
Filtered bovine thrombus left no residual clot, and filtered porcine and human blood showed no sign of red blood cell injury or change in clotting profile.
